The aerial robotics research group GRVC and FADA-CATEC have developed recently a new landing method for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) without GPS. This landing method can be used in movable platforms and it’s the very first technology that allows to the UAVs to land in all kind of surfaces and in automatic mode.
The goal of this method is the UAV landing in movable platforms without GNSS and with one centimetre accuracy. The relative position and the velocity between the aerial vehicle and the movable platform are estimated from a cable that physically links the UAV and the landing platform. This link also provides a centred position of the vehicle and increases the its stability and equilibria after make contact with the landing surface.
This landing method will be useful in safety and rescue of people tasks, issues which were explored inside the FP-7 Ec-Safemobil project.
